Soil, in its very nature, is unique and variable. It's designed this way. And within that variability lies the opportunity. In fact, in all aspects of life, where there is no variability, there will be no opportunity!
(That will give you something to think about for a bit!)
But as it is in life, if we're going to be successful with optimizing the opportunity of variability, we MUST become great at managing two key elements.
- Measuring Soil Variability to Identify the Opportunity it Holds
- Choosing the Right Management Practices to Take Advantage of the Identified Opportunities
Due to the variable nature of soil, to capture the real opportunity hidden within it, three key areas should become the focus.

1. Accessible Soil/Plant Nutrients
Everyone is aware of soil sampling, soil mapping, and tissue sampling. Each having a place and each being a science in itself. These processes will provide a baseline (starting point) to begin identifying the opportunity that exists within the variability of the soil.
Once the variability is identified, it's time to review the data and begin defining how to capture the opportunity revealed to us.

2. Plant Roots Access to Water
Once the opportunity is identified, how do you turn that information into real value?
First we look at two specific things and ask ourselves these questions;
- How do we make the soil nutrients more available to the plants?
- Once we make the nutrients more available to the plants, how do we get those nutrients into the plants?
Plants drink nutrition. So understanding how plants develop roots and how to make it easy for them to access nutritious water is of the utmost importance! Today, most of this knowledge is assumed. But to farm for profit, we need to KNOW how to develop deeper roots, and KNOW how to equip those roots are accessing nutritional water.

Results and Causes
To get the best results, we must focus on creating the best causes. This begins by learning to KNOW how our current management decision and our current soil profiles are creating our current results (yield).
The best way to KNOW how this happens we need "eyes" below the root zone. By watching the roots develop on a daily basis, we'll learn the impact of both the environment and our management decisions.
As we begin implementing changes to our input programs we can begin tracking the improvement below the surface and then measure the improvement through yield data and other results focused data.
